If you want to see how wide the 8mm (equivalent to 12mm on FF) is, take a look at these 12mm FF shots.

The Tokina 10-17mm is a fisheye lens, so it's not comparable as the Sigma 8-16mm should have very little barrel distortion.

So the Sigma 8-16 on APS-C is equivalent to the Sigma 12-24 on FF.
Quite a feat!

An interesting interview with Sigma's COO on other site.

Summary points are:
* Foveon based mirrorless changable lens camera planned
* Sigma considering making lenses for other mirrorless changable lens cameras, waiting to see what systems actually sell first.
* FLD co-developed with Hoya. Cheaper and lighter than flourite, behaves similar to flourite. Softer material, less sensitive to heat than flourite.
* New big aperture lenses will follow 50mm f/1.4 - bigger, heavier, costlier than OEM lens, better performance particularly wide open.
* Flare performance designed from start, have own simulator

I wonder on the cost/performance side. It sounds like they're not afraid to go expensive to make better lenses, yet FLD is meant to be cheaper than flourite so there's a potential saving there.

FLD may be cheaper than fluorite, but how much cheaper is it? The price of a lens isn't always dictated by the production costs. It's common knowledge that margins are larger on high end photographic equipment, so it could be that Sigma are going after the highly profitable high end market.

The whole lens isn't flourite or FLD, so the savings are only a proportion of the whole. The interview makes it sound like Sigma are not afraid to go higher in cost than original brand. If so, it would have to be best in class. Time will tell where the lenses end up in price/performance.

Just to make it very clear: The Sigma 70-200/2.8 OS "suffers" the same shrinkage than the new Nikkor 70-200/2.8 VRII.
It is only 1:8 maximum magnification at 1.4m MFD.
So nobody who reads the Camera Labs forum can excuse himself for not having been warned

Since last year, Sigma change their strategy significantly. Before they produce cheap low quality lens. Expect more quality lenses from Sigma in the future.

OS-ification of the zoom lenses are nice. But the most interesting might be the performance of their prime lenses and future prime lenses, (warning: they are usually thick and fat).

btw 17-50mm is a bit surprising for me, because Sigma just launched their 17-70mm f/2.8-4. This will confuse people a bit.

That's like saying the standard 18-55mm will confuse people when they look at the 17-55mm f/2.8. The difference in price usually irons out any confusion
