Hi folks,

I'm not sure I should be encouraging such blatant marketing but X-Rite have produced a new web resource called, unsurprisingly, xrite photo. And just for fun they include a color acuity test.

I'm not sure what the balance of the result is between how good one's eyes are and how good one's monitor is but, being considerably closer to 60 than 50, I'm happy enough with a score of 4. Can you beat it?

Bob.

I did this a long time ago... can't remember the scoring system, but I got one pair of shades mixed up.

I did this a while ago at home, and got perfect. Then a couple of months later I did it at uni, and got 4 or something. I'm blaming the monitor I was using at uni, and am going with my best score ;)

I got 4 with my uncalibrated laptop screen. I was thinking of calibrating it a few months back, but now its probably more likely Ill make it worse, Im quite happy with that!

Here's a thought: an uncalibrated screen is like a sentence with all the words jumbled up where each word can be seen and distinguished from its neighbours and the sentence even appears to make sense. That's the "acuity" part of the test above.

Uncalibrated: The screen has all the words in the right order but calibrated!

Calibrated:.... But the calibrated screen has all the words in the right order!

It's only when you see the same words forming the original text that you get the true picture. Possibly the same is true of computer monitors and photo-editing!

Bob.

I don't quite understand the meaning of this, what exactly does it attempt to score? and what does a score of 10 mean?

It is meant to indicate how well you can distinguish between subtle hues of colour. The score is an error rating, so the higher it is, the worse you are.
