you will need to set up file sharing on both computers and make sure they can communicate between each other, try this:

have you also tried disabling and enabling the connections, they sometimes just need to be jump started..

if you have set a certain folder to share have you tried checking if its on the network list

windows xp e.g.:-

start / my network places / view workgroup computers (on the left)

or tried creating a shortcut to it

right click
select create shortcut
then either browse across the network or try typing in the accress to the other pc

\\pcname\shared folder or drive name

i can create shortcuts on my desk top using the other computers IP address and the folder i want to point to.

I can access the latop from the PC fine, and i can see the PC from the latop on the workgroup computers but when i click on it i get the error saying i cant access it. but i can view shared folders if i use the IP and the folder name, ie \\192.168.1.11\C\photos

any ideas anyone?

right click on the actual folder and enter it's properties, allow for sharing on the folder.

errr that doesnt actually help the fact i that i cant view the PC from the Laptop on the workgroup computer folder. of course i have to share the folder in the propperties otherwise when i type in the IP then the folder name i wouldnt be able to access it.

Do you have any anti virus type software installed that includes a firewall? Sometimes these can prevent one PC seeing another so try disabling it on the desktop. If that fixes it you need to setup an exclusion in the firewall and re-enable. Also check your router settings to make sure you haven't blocked access in there as some routers have built in firewalls or addressing rulesets.

Mac's auto configure eh - sounds like a security hole to me ;)
