I think with these kinds of shots you need some shadow and highlight to add drama or emotion, so the viewer can connect with the photo... as it is now, the light is flat (good exposure), so it lacks anything the viewer can get attached to.

Yeah, I think I see what you mean.. The "flat" angle does not help the photo at all. Almost like a "chord chart".. The photo does not jump out at you- no emotion.. I agree.. & theres that lighting issue again.....

The inlays "should" have come out better.. Thanks for your input-I agree ! Back to the drawing board..

You need a lot more contrast in those shots for it to be eye catching. I suggest playing with the levels/curves tool in your favorite image editor and making the hands lighter in colour.

Hope you don't mind me making some tweaks to your image. This illustrates what I was talking about.
