POLLS CLOSED - WE HAVE A WINNER!

Congratulations to shallowlife for winning their second Assignment, here with 13% of the total votes and just pipping SolarSanction to the prize. SolarSanction earned 10% of your votes and almost made it second win, so congratulations to them too! Coming in just behind in joint third position were psvendse and magnipheeque, both sharing 9% of the votes, and just behind them in joint fourth place were naniani and Nu2foto, each with 8%.

So a very close result, but shallowlife is the winner, so as usual has until the end of this month to decide on a theme for February's Assignment! Please let us know what you decide (along with any additional rules or restrictions) in the December comments and questions thread!

Gordon

SUBMISSIONS CLOSED! VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE!

POLLS CLOSE AT MIDNIGHT GMT 21 JANUARY WHEN THE WINNER WILL GET TO CHOOSE THE NEXT THEME!

Hi everyone! Welcome to December's Assignment!

The theme for this month is "Shadows", as suggested by SolarSanction who won the October 2009 competition. Be sure to read the whole post for the rules.

The rules!

1: You can only submit one image and it has to be taken during December 2009. Photos taken earlier will be disqualified!

2: All images submitted must be no more than 500 pixels on their longest side, although you can include a link to a full resolution version if you like. Flickr users must link back to the original version to comply with its latest rules.

As always, please exercise good judgement on what is suitable for the forum. See the Forum Rules for guides.

Please include a sentence or two with your photo describing what you were trying to achieve and if there were any particular challenges in doing so like, for example, any special exposure or lighting setup.

We're all enthusiasts here, so it's also great to see what equipment you used and the settings too. So please also include the following:

Camera Model:
Lens and focal length:
Aperture:
Shutter Speed:
Sensitivity:
Post processing:

Submissions will close at midnight GMT on 31st December 2009. The final poll will follow, pending any New Year hangover.

Please remember this thread is for submissions only. If you'd like to comment on any of the submissions or ask any questions, please do so in the December 2009 Comments and Questions thread!

Thanks and good luck!

A burst of slanting winter sunshine caught my specs on the garden bench. "That'll do" I thought!
I quite like the way the shadow droops over the timber edges ... a bit like Dali's soft clocks.

The sun shining on a clear glass vase etched with flowers, gave a great but pretty colourless shadow, so i put a mdf board behind which gave me the colour you see and an interesting background texture. Sue.

Zurich, Schwamendingen, Switzerland. After several days of moderate snowing, the sun finally shined on this city. I think B&W captures the contrast between sun, shadows and snow the best.

Image

Technical info
Camera: Canon 500D, Av mode.
Lens: Canon EF-S 10-22mm wide angle lens with UV filter.
Shutter speed: various (HDR using six different exposures).
Aperture: f/11 for all exposures.
ISO: 100 for all exposures.
PP: HDR done using Photomatix Pro. Adobe Photoshop CS4 for mac used to switch to black and white. Reduced levels of blue and cyan to add emphasis to shadows.

Here I am standing in the shadows of the Griffith Observatory. The light in contrast to the shadows is almost surreal and takes me to another world.

In the shadows of one of the arches you will also notice two people, obscured both by size and the relative darkness of their position. I stare and wonder what what these two are doing, are they living in a moment all their own?

Image

This is my first entry for this too, I believe... so go easy on me ;)

Shadows turning into shadows.

This is normally grass, so there are no shadows.
But the snow made it possible this time.

I just got this camera and since I read nearly every Review on this Page (it was enourmous help, thank you Gordon!!), I would like to join this friendly forum population to.
Well I took these eggholders and laid them on the table under the light and experimented with whitebalance and soforth, until this came out!

I found that this image is defined by the shadows as much as the light...and the look in her eyes made me wonder what shadows lurk in the dark recesses in her mind..lol. (actually this young lady has a very "sunny personality")
