I am planing to go on a snowboard trip this winter, so I need a backpack which carries my photo gear, something to eat, other small stuff (cellphone, wallet,ipod). This wouldn't be to hard to find because there are tons out there. But because I'm going snowboarding, I need a bag which is weatherproof(water,cold) and padded really much incase I fall or something hits it.

The two models I found were the:

Burton Zoom pack

They both seem pretty good, but they are simply to big! I'm a small guy and my camera gear would only be: My canon rebel xsi + Tamron 17-50mm(which I'm getting soon), my 50mm 1.8 a filter or two and maybe a tripod...

Both of the bags could easily fit 4 lenses, which I simply don't need.

If anybody has experiences with any of the two bags or knows of a different bag, which I could like, help is appreciated! General tips aswell!

Hi David, interesting question. I know of many bags which are water-resistant, but none which are sufficiently padded to protect your gear - and you - from a hard fall. As such, I've always avoided DSLRs when boarding, and gone for compacts in a pocket instead.

So I'm not going to be of any help here, but I'll be really interested to see what's out there. Those two you've suggested certainly look good...

I'm new to snowboarding (and photography). So I fall alot. I don't think there's any padding or bag that can protect your equipment if you fell directly on it.

But what about some sort of hardshell case? The camera may survive, but you may not if you landed on one of these...

I'd say stick with a pocket camera, unless you're doing a snowboard video shoot.

The Lowepro Dryzone series of bags are waterproof and as rugged as their best camera bags. They come in a variety of sizes so you should be able to find one that fits you.

I think you need to ask yourself several questions:

How good am I at snowboarding?
What are the conditions I will be boarding in?
What is the difficulty of the runs or parks I will be in?


As a snowboarder myself, I know that I would trust myself with delicate equipment on some runs and others I would not. Furthermore, there are some conditions in which I would never take anything delicate. If you plan on boarding in anything icy or packed granular, even the most experienced riders will catch a lip.

Really the question you have to ask yourself is "How often do I plan on landing on my back?"

Good luck finding a bag. As for myself, I wouldn't trust myself with a dslr and lenses because of all of the unforeseen circumstances.

I wouldn't risk your gear if you're new to snowboarding. Stick with a compact camera like the waterproof canon that's just been reviewed
