how is this lens for you? the pictures look GREAT!! i'm really liking this lens as an alternative kit lens for a Sony or Canon (haven't made up my mind yet) that i hope to get soon.

Well I like this lens better than both the 18-55 IS and the 17-85 IS USM from Canon.

Actually I find that if this lens had OS it would be one of the best standart zooms out there, especially since u get this lens with a macro "bonus"

But it has a few downsides, the zoom ring doesnt feel very good, its moving pretty lifeless, and the cam extends quite a bit.
72mm is a big filter size, and will cost u if u want to use a PL filter.
And as mentioned before, it doesnt come with OS, which is just a pity, but the for the price its pretty much the best lens u can get with this zoom range.

Though, if u dont need 70mm, I would suggest u to look at the Sigma 17-50EX 2.8 Macro (Hope that I got the numbers right) which sounds pretty neat since its an EX model and has a constant 2.8F stop.

Best regards,

Chris

i like it a lot. i think it's very versatile lense for everyday use, for landscapes, poertraits, macros and everything else, what your eyes naturally see..
here are some of mine pics, taken with this lens

how long does the max f/2.8 last before it shrinks to f/3 or f/3.5??

And is the macro mode a true 1:1 macro??

Uh I love your pictures, especially the second and third one are great!

Well about the aperture, it doesnt last very long unfortunately.. T,T
At least you got it at the wide end right?

And the macro isnt a true 1 to 1 macro of course, its rather a 1 to 2 macro but thats still fine for me since I am a beginner anyways.

In my opinion this lens would be perfect if it just had IS.

well i'm lucky to have this lense on a pentax K10D, because it has a built in image stabilization..

i'm sorry to admit, but the second picture from my set is an HDR.. so you couldn't really get such result right out of camera..

earlier i did an experiment about the aperture size at various focal lenght so the result is here:

from 17-20mm it's f/2.8
from 21-~24mm it's f/3.2
from 25-35mm it's f/3.5
from 36-~63mm it's f/4.0
from 64-70mm it's f/4.5
well it might vary 1mm to some direction but roughtly it's that..

:) hope this was helpful

thanks... i'm really interested in this lens.

It seems like an obvious step up from any kit lens and can still satisfy those of us that will always and forever be limited by a budget.

Wayyy too soft, but its the best I could archieve without flash use. (my new flash is on the way though!)

*note*
You can not use the build in flash since a shadow of the lens will almost always be visible.

Loved the photos! I bought a 2nd-hand Sigma 2.8-4.55 a couple of weeks ago for $210(AUD). I am still experimenting with it, but it's a big improvement on the Nikkor 18-55 kit lens.

I also purchased a Nikon D80 body recently for $925(AUD). The dealer broke up the D80 kit just to sell me the body.

So, my photographic life is becoming more and more interesting and rewarding!

Tibian.

Can I use my Canon 400D to take photos like these using the same lense? Are these shots taken at 20cm? Is this as macro as you can get with this lense? :)

I am referring to the shots at the top of this page. E.g. Ant on leaf!
