I would like to setup three or four monitors on my computer. I want the screens to have individual properties but also be connected in a panoramic fashion. Can I add more video cards or should I get a ready made unit that supports several monitors? If so, where's a good place to look for one?

Most video cards support 2 monitors, but can support more with splitters. You cannot exceed the largest virtual resolution that way though. Matrox cards are made for multimonitor work, but a crossfire/SLI configuration should do the job too.

That being said, just start out with 2 screens

Any 2 graphics cards will work, they don't have to be in SLI or Crossfire.

Even two totally different cards will work.

You might have some driver niggles with different cards so idealy 2 the same are prefered. If they support SLI/Crossfire, all the better.
