im looking to buy a new lens for my d40x and want to get a good amount of zoom.

ive seen this sigma 55-200mm lens

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product/default.aspx?sku=1019582

i'm currently using the kit lens (18-55mm), im newbie so was wondering if because it was 200mm would it get 4 times closer than my kit lens when zooming in

Not exactly. The easiest way to see what you are going to get would be to look at some sample images. Gordon has done a review of the Nikkor 55-200VR which is near identical in field of view so would give you a very good idea of what to expect with the Sigma.

200/55 means distant subjects should be about 3.6x linearly bigger, but the lenses may not be exactly their stated range so that could vary a bit.

This extra "closeness" may not apply when close focusing.
