dont rule out short-medium telephotos Nathan.
Less or no barrel distortion, more evident background blurring (esp. with high const. apertures) and they can just get into situations that a standard zoom lens can't.
Most portrait photographers (Been doing research for portraiture in photography class) have a standard zoom lens and a fast cont aperture lens.

Trust me, you'll need some sort of telephoto lens at some point.
