How much should I charge for prints?

Is 5$ CAD asking too much for a 4x6 print? I wont be selling online, only locally.

It depends on the quality of the print as well as the size.

The prints are going to be 4x6, and printed from snapfish.

Now keep in mind im no professional. There are just a few close friends/relatives interested in my photos. and I would like to sell a few to them.

I've seen UK Snapfish results and they're consumerist quality prints. This doesn't mean they're bad, but as a professional I'd prefer to have the highest quality prints to offer my clients. This means a higher cost for the paper, the printer, and the investment in colour calibration, which the end product justifies.

What you might want to ask yourself is whether you'd pay the $5 CAD for the prints you're offering. If you're happy, then the price may well be right.

Personally I think i would pay around the 5 dollar mark for my prints. I am going to ask to some potential customers that I can trust what they would honestly pay for the prints.

i think $5 a print for 4x6 is pretty high...i can print 8x10s in colour at about 50-80 cents a page

as you can see, they charge 49 cents a page for 8.5x11s in colour

As mentioned earlier, the cost to print is dependent largely on the quality. I doubt the low cost print options will prove to be as good as an exhibition quality print. The price premium will be picked up by the client, but you're offering a much higher standard of product.

As for the snapfish prints, I'd agree that $5 might be a little high, but that's your call. I ask a similar amount in GBP for a 6x4" but to an exhibition quality finish rather than consumerist.

agree with photoj about the fact that it depends on the quality of the prints...in my college, 8x10s can be printed at about 75-80 cents a page and they look pretty decent quality to me...they give well saturated colours and print out on nice, glossy papers

Ed, do you have your images printed by a third party or have you invested 100s if not 1000s on an exhibition quality printer?

What would you suggest for someone like Terry or myself that does work for people every now and then and wants to offer quality prints, assuming that the image quality is spectacular.

Is Snapfish or MPix a satisfactory route for the semi-professional/amatuer? And can you give a small comparison of what it costs you to print a photo compared to the $0.19 it costs to print a 4x6 on Snapfish or Mpix?
