Good review, as always.

Would you agree that AA batteries offer significantly less autonomy than a proprietary battery? I feel that negative aspect was left out of your conclusion.

I'm saying this because my good old HP photosmart 735 uses AA batteries and those last about half an hour. Or less.

On the contrary, the proprietary battery on my Canon Ixus 75 lasted for days.

Of course AA batteries are readily available everywhere you travel, but at the end of the day, you end up spending a lot of money just on batteries. What you save when you buy the camera, you waste when you use it daily.

So I suggest this matter be given a higher weight on the overall evaluation (conclusion).

Personally I prefer Lithium Ion packs as they're smaller, lighter, last longer and mean the camera has to come with a mains recharger too. But some people still like the convenience of AAs, so it's swings and roundabouts.

I think the S8000fd has bigger issues to worry about though like the fringing at telephoto and lack of RAW mode...

Hey Gordon,
Thanks for helping me join the forum, I've owned the s8000fd for a little more than a month now and after your review, I had to come to it's defense. There are so many settings and modes, you just have to know which ones work well for each situation. Hope these examples show the possibilities. It's great when shoot macro in flash,low light sunsets hand held.and sharpness when the 18X zoom is fully extended.

Hi Barry,

Thanks for reminding us that you can produce clean images from non-DSLR cameras especially if, as in 1/ and 3/,
the ISO is turned right down to 64.

For the pixel peepers amongst us could you share whether the images are cropped, and if so by how much? Thanks.

Why do I see purple on my first pic on here and not on my image viewer(Thumbs Plus)? Nevermind, I see a little now.

None of these pictures were cropped, I did use s tripod in the first pic Sunset pic was taken across the street from where I live, it was just a spur of the moment type shot
