Does anybody know if this will work? My current velbon tripod is still decent after years and years of punishment, but the head is pretty withered and could do with a replacement. Are these types of things interchangeable between brands?

Thanks for any help.

I haven't tried the combo, but I do know I've had a manfrotto head on the larger thread of a gorillapod SLR Zoom - that's a 3/8in thread, so I suspect the manfrotto thread is similar or identical. Of course it's up to you if you want to risk damaging the thread if its even slightly different!

Hi there

I used to own a Velbon Sherpa 600R and decided I wanted a Ball head. I tested out several and the Manfrotto was the perfect choice.

After investigating further before I purchased, I noticed the thread on the tripod was 1/4 inch and not 3/8 inch (basically, half the size)

If I went for the Manfrotto head I would have to purchase an adapter aswell. This unfortunalty made the combo ugly and added unneccesary weight, so I did not purchase it. I also noticed the ball head base was much wider than the tripod head, and would look daft and really not acceptable.

Velbon do there own head with the correct thread size, but it cannot carry the same weight as the Manfrotto.

View for yourself before you buy is what i recommend.

Hope that helps

From memory the male thread on the top of my Velbon tripod was 1/4" BUT there was a 1/4" to 3/8" adaptor sleeve on the 1/4" thread OR the sleeve came off with and in the velbon head, so, as such a manfrotto head could be mounted on the velbon tripod. HOWEVER I seem to remember that both the 1/4" male thread and the 1/4" to 3/8" sleeve were too long for the threaded hole in the manfrotto head and meant that a manfrotto head did not seat/sit against/on the actual tripod body. The way around that would be to make or buy a thick, wide washer to fit over the 3/8" sleeve and use that washer as a spacer/shim/packing-piece between the tripod body and the manfrotto head. As far as I know the threads are generally BSW, British-standard-Whitworth? or an equivalent German thread.
