Hi Guys,
I recently indstalled linux, because i wanted to try and have a go with it, which i did, but then i decided it wasn't for me, so, simply i just went into Vista and deleted the partition containing linux, BIG mistake, because it didn't fully delete GRUB, and now grub reports an error, and i can't boot into windows, i have tried 'fixmbr, after booting with the Vista disk, which camme with my pc. But didn't suceed, so can anybody explain in detail, how i can remove bloody GRUB from my HD, without doing a fresh install, because i have a couple of files on my PC, which i hadn't backed up in the last 6 hours IE, an essay for school and about 60 pics worth of LR edits, which i don't want to do again!
Please may someone help me, as i am very annoyed, and just (never thought i'd say this) want Vista back!

Not idea how to remove grub but I'm quite sure it can be done from your linux distro itself. Chances are that your installer CD has the live version on it so maybe try that? Worst case scenario: you have to reformat the drive, so you can use the live cd to transfer your files.

is the hard drive SATA?

if so, just plug it into a different computer and format the partition. you might have to run a repair on vista in DOS to get it to boot, but it should do the trick.

EDIT: I had a similar problem with the windows 7 beta. and that is what the local computer shop recommended.... i needed them to take me through the DOS recovery step by step because it was doing things it shouldn't have been doing, but in the end it all worked.

call your local computer shop and ask for some help. most are fairly friendy (in my area anyway.

Buy a seperate hard drive in future.

But as stated, just slip the drive into another machine if you need data of ASAP before you can figure out how to fix it.

I am very pleased to say, that I'VE FIXED IT ! When i saw the Vista load bar, i had the longest sigh of relief ever! Although thanks for all your guys contribution to try and help me out, i guess i know that this place will always be here to try and help, thanks alot!

for future reference

extra drives etc are not needed, just down load a linux live cd (free open source) like ubuntu live, boot from cd and delete, repair etc...
