Congratulations to Sublimity for having the Ace in the hand and winning March's Assignment. It was a very close run though with Sublimity and GCJ neck in neck until the last few hours. So congratulations also to GCJ for coming a close second, and also to geo who came third. And finally, thanks once more to everyone who entered, especially all our first-timers.

This means Sublimity has until April 30th to set the theme for next month's Assignment, plus any conditions. Please let us know in the March Comments and Questions thread.

Hi everyone! Welcome to March's Assignment!

The theme for this month is "Luck", as suggested by thestig2010 who won the January 2009 competition.

In thestig2010's own words: "The first thing that popped into my head was St. Patrick's Day. So my decision for this month's theme is "Luck."

I'll leave the final interpretation up to you all, but the Merriam Webster definition of "luck" is defined as "a force that brings good fortune or adversity -OR- the events or circumstances that operate for or against an individual."

I'm not a huge fan of post processing, so lets go easy on the photoshoping. Any kind of adjustment to contrast, exposure, color balance, etc is more than welcome, but try to leave the image as natural as possible.

So there you have it, the theme for March is "Luck", and as always the image you submit has to be taken during the month of entry – that is, taken during March 2009. Photos taken on an earlier date will be disqualified! And remember, all images submitted here must be no more than 500 pixels on their longest side.

Bad luck or just bad planning?
We've all been there!



Pentax K20D 18-55mm SMC-DA lens, hand held, ISO 400, independent bounce flash on camera pointed backwards to keep shadows soft. PP: a little dodging to bring up the texture inside the roll, crop, resize.

After 120 exposures I eventually got a coin-tossing shot that was half-decent. Thank goodness for digital photography! Synchronising my husband's ... er ... tossing abilities, with my stabbing of the release button took some doing. I'd like to pay tribute to both his patience and his endurance!


Canon Powershot G7 on tripod, set to wide angle. Manual focus approx 1 metre, ISO 400, manual exposure 1/125th @ f.8, supplementary Nissin flash on camera set to high power (for short exposure / small aperture / depth of field). Much experimentation necessary to get approriate exposure. Post processing: a little sharpening, cropped and resized.

What it boils down to!! Chance
