I am very interested in FZ50. Like the styling, features and especially the zoom ring. But I am a little concerned about the reviews (here and others) about "noise". A question for those that have the camera and Gordon.

Does any of the noise go away if you shoot at a lower resolution (8MP for instance)?

I will primarily be viewing on my computer (21" monitor) and making prints (11"x17").

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Scott

Hi Scott, and welcome to the CamreaLabs forum.

To your question: Well I really don't think that reducing the resolution to 8MP in camera does anything to noise. Maybe perhaps reducing the resolution significantly by postprocessing will kill some of the noise. by significantly I mean to below 5MP!
But on the other hand you have to decide how critical the noise is to you: If you view your pictures even on a 1920x1200 HD-Monitor od a 1920x1080 HD-TV set you're reducing the resolution to 2MP! So noise is not that much of an issue. The same holds true for prints at DIN A5 or 5x7".
So you always have to keep in mind, when you see Gordon's test results, that are 100% crops. This does not occur under normal viewing conditions!
