Has anyone had any luck using a generic (non-Panasonic) battery with the FZ100? Several vendors are listing them on eBay. However I was under the impression that the OEM battery was chipped by Panasonic. Am assuming an unchipped battery would either not work at all or (possibly) provide power to the camera but no information (such as battery life etc) to the menu.

I haven't tried any third party batteries so can't say, but as you know, Panasonic could block them now, or with later firmware, so it's a gamble.

they are pretty cheap on ebay here in the States. am trying to decide if its worth the risk. Here's what one vendor told me when I inquired about the "replacement" battery he was offering:

hello dear,
thank you for your question. our battery is just replacement, not original ones, can't be compared to original ones. it can use, but won't show battery icon on the screen. hope you can understand.
regards,
ATC

I think he/she is saying that the battery will fit, the battery may work but will not provide any information to the camera. You get juice but no message. Could be worth the gamble as a back up only. Vendor is charging $18 with free shipping from China to the US.

Just bear in mind, a future firmware update for the camera might block it altogether. Although you don't have to update the firmware of course.
