Just been playing with a G1 today - very nice, but what's the story with these weird bands which run all the way across the image at ISO 800 and above? Is this a known flaw with the G1 or have I got a dodgy unit?

Interesting. While it is indeed a known issue with the GH1, this is the first I've heard of it with the G1. Of course, given that the two cams are somewhat similar, I suppose it's possible they could have similar issues.

In any case, the suggested work around for the GH1 is to thin out your DoF and/or avoid (underexposed) solid backgrounds.

HTH - Mark
