Hello everyone,

I have been reading the Camera Labs website and forum for a few weeks now, but I need to know more before I make a decision on which camera to buy, so I finally decided to sign up to ask a few questions.

For a while I have been tying to decide on a good all round super zoom camera. I have narrowed my choice down to the Panasonic Lumix FZ-28 or the Canon Powershot SX10. There are things I love about both cameras, but the FZ seems slightly more suited to my needs.

I wanted to find out if any FZ owners have experimented with high dynamic range photography with this model. As the SX10 does not shoot RAW this is one of the things that is swaying me in the direction of the FZ28. I am aware that the file extension is .RW2 and was also wondering if there is much program support for this.

I have never created HDR images before, it is something I would love to learn about, so I would like to know if this camera would be a good choice for this purpose.

You can create HDR images with just about any camera where you can change the exposure, so you will definitely be able to do HDR with either the FZ28 or SX10. All you need for HDR these days is a camera, tripod and software that merges the different exposures.

Thanks for the replies guys. I realized a couple of days ago after some reading that you don't need to use RAW for HDR, oops.

So now that RAW is no longer an issue, I am thinking of getting the Canon, but I'm now torn between SX10 and SX1.

I tried out an FZ-28 in a shop recently and it felt almost too light, and I hate to say it but it felt a bit cheap.

exactly how are the videos sharper? the FZ28 has 720 and the SX10 IS is 480?

and better images is debatable.

Did you compare them yourself? Any links with proof?

I saw some images from both SX1 and SX10 and I was not impressed at all.

My FZ28 went back to Panasonic but I'm still in doubt to buy another one, at 35% less then what I bought mine for.
I really liked the quality of the photo's.

At first I also thought it fellt like cheap plastic and too low weight. Now I'm using my old Canon G2 again and that feels like a block and not so good in the hand as the FZ28.
I've also used the S3-IS, equally heavy then the G2 but better in the hand. To be honest the S3-IS is no competition for the FZ28.
If there is a significant difference in the price I would highly consider the FZ28. That it is using RW2 format is no issue since the new photoshop etc already support it. The rest is just a matter of time.
If you plan to do HDR, which I have not done, I think it would be better to use RAW because you are actually adding up different photo's. If you use jpg then your adding up compressed (not so correct) images.

1 advantage that the Canon does not have, cause you can't shoot raw pictures, is creating HDR from 1 raw picture.
