 Post subject: EC-20 or EC-14?
PostPosted: Fri Apr 25, 2008 5:17 am
I've posted previously my interest in the ec-20 and that it would be coupled eventually with my zd 70-300mm lens and since then I've looked further into the matter and I now have it on order but lately I came across a few threads on dpreview which where a little disturbing and this got me thinking a little about whether or not the zd 70-300 + ec-20 is a viable and workable combination?
I need your feedback and help guys. My order for the EC-20 arrives in approximately 2-3 weeks so it's not too late for me to order the EC-14 instead.
The following are some of the concerns I read which where raised on the dpreview forums, please read these and based on your practical experience and knowledge some of your input would be appreciated.

EC-20 + zd 70-300

. Two f stops loss on the ZD 70-300 becoming a 600/1200(equivalent) lens
at f8-f11 and therefore very slow
. Concerns where raised about the usability of this combo in any
conditions other than a very bright day with plenty of light and therefore
very dark
. This combo really not stable unless with a tripod or monopod
therefore impractical and cumbersome(though I remember gordon
submitting a post about the e-510 with the bigma with IS on and
. The IQ takes a serious hit and autofocus never works
. Image degradation and image softness issues inevitable
. Ultimately the EC-20 is intended for fast lenses like the 50-200 f2.8

EC-14 + zd 70-300
. Ultimately most forums I read people seem to think this was an effective
combo or at least the safer and practical way to go.
. I even read that it's possible to have auto focus with th 70-300 working
in very bright conditions with almost no loss in IQ and very little if no

It may seem I've written an essay here and that I have answered my own questions? well all this is what I've read elsewhere and perhaps someone on these forums knows better, I certainly don't.
Thanks guys
