I'm looking for a nice flash for my Oly E510 that I can take off the camera and use from an angle. I'd like to know what your suggestions would be for a set. It should include a flash, some way to synchronize the flash with my camera, and a diffuser.
Thanks ahead!

Hey Paukl,

I was rather naive when i bought my flash, i saw the fl-36 and thought... wow nice and cheap and small... now i live with the fact that with just two AA batteries i can take up to 8 seconds to recycle some times, and that can be very frustrating.

I would seriously suggest either the fl-50, which have dropped in price since the release of the fl-50r. Or get Metz 48 Af-1(which is like the fl-36 but has four batteries so recycles faster) or the Metz 58 (fl-50 alternative).

If i could go back in time i would buy the fl-50. I suggest do your research.

As for nice angles and taking it off body, canon off shoe flash cords work on olympus cameras, and are cheaper then the olympus cords!

I just bought a ebay olympus cord for about £20, i let you know if it works fully when it arrives.

hope this helps.

Do you happen to know what the difference is between the fl-50 and the fl-50R (likewise for fl-36 / fl-36R)
I guess I'll get a powerful flash someday, but I'll have a little bit of saving to do...

The difference is the remote firing with the E-3 and the new e-420, you can use the fl-36r and the fl-50r wirelessly, and that’s about it.

Concerning price the fl-36 you can buy for £135 and the fl-50 has dropped to a bargain £175!!! So I would spend the extra money. Not sure how much it is on the continent.

the fl-36 is +/- €149
the fl-36R is +/- €229
the fl-50 is +/- €334
the fl-50R is +/- €437

The price difference between the 36 and the 50 is, as you can see, quite big!
I'm pretty sure I'll be fine without wireless use, I'd only get the R-version if the price difference is very small.
I might just have to come to England... :D
