I am currently researching to buy a new DSLR. I am leaning towards the D80 or the 400D. I know the Olympus E-510 has an arsenal of features and I want to know how does it compare all around to it's rivals?

I am also about to buy the E-510, but I can live without the LIVE VIEW as its not an important feature in my eyes. I mean my Basic FUJIFILM 6500 has live view and I never use it.

The reason why I am going for the 510 over the rest is the built in ANTI SHAKE...but would I be better of getting a NIKKON D40x or CANNON 400D and A better lens kit with ANTI SHAKE in the lens?????

Or should I save and get the NIKKON D80. :(

Hello BottleMore and Wonda Boy, and welcome to the Camera Labs forum!
For starters read Gordons verdict on the E510 and his comparison to other DSLRs here: http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Olymp ... dict.shtml

Now we will need to compare the E-510 with the EOS 40D and of course two new Canon kit lenses with image stabilization. Has Canon raised the bar again? or is the E510 still the bargin? And what about Oly's new pro offering? Being a consumer, i just love this cut-throat competition between manufactures! I wonder what the discounted prices will be by late November?

Hi Japhy! My experience with price-trends is: They keep it up before x-mas because everybody wants one NOW and the discount in Jan/Feb to get rid of excess inventory...

Well I don't think so, comparing the E-510 with the 40D is like comparing apples and oranges. They are both in a totalty different segment. If you want to compare anything you should wait for the E-3 and put it next to the 40D

Not much different than the initial SRP, although I think if you're in the market for an E-400/E-500 or 30D you'll can get some discount. (old inventory which they will try to sell in slow season, just before X-mas)

I agree, from what I have seen the Cannon 40D is nearly 3 times the price of the E-510!!!!!

So not the same at all......

We'll see when/if E3 comes out then it can be a good comparison if you take 40D with E3.

Rather than the body comparison I believe Oly has done a very good job with their lenses, check different test results and you can see how Canon is lucky selling their 18-55mm with their best seller SLR came that looks like a toy to me :)

I hope that have changed it

I think you should think ahead when you make your choice.

If you just want anti shake and the kit lenses are all you will ever buy, then the E510 would be the best choice: it's cheaper and it has better lenses.

If you think you will upgrade later on, then Nikon and Canon will offer you more choice. But, IS or VR lenses are not cheap!

I already have the E500 and it's very good, but if I would have to choose again, I don't know: D40x, D80 or E510.
