My 28 - 80 AF lens also has Macro facility, but macro is not mentioned in the new breed of AF-S lenses. Do you have to use close-up rings now, or have I missed something? I cannot find an appropriate AF-S replacement for when I buy a D200.

Currently the 28-80mm Nikon lenses are not designated as "macro". Do you have an older lens? How close can you get / magnification? Why not use this lens on the D200?

Thomas: Yes the lens is an older AF 28 - 85, 3.5 - 4.5. From memory I think it goes down to 10.25 inches from focal plane, which takes the end of the lens to about 2 or 3 inches from the subject. I think it gives 2X mag at this range. Yes I can use it on a D200; I am trying to find an equivalent for my wife to use on a D40X. We both take wild flower pics, as well as general photos.

Yeah, on the D40/x you need an AF-S lens - I see!
I think your choices are limited then to the obvious:
- Nikkor 105mm VR (fantastic!)
- Sigma HSM macro lenses like the 150mm 2.8 EX DG APO HSM IF or the AF 180mm 3.5 EX DG APO HSM IF
