See test of the 1.4 here
And the test of the 1.8 there
The 1.4 seems to be a very decent lens.

I just purchused one with my D80. Thought it would be good for low light and Astro Photography. And was a very cheap lense.

Personally, I've got my eye on the 1.8D 50mm lens.

The 1.4 is over double the price of the 1.8D and doesn't offer over double the difference in quality from what I've heard of people using it. Also, if you're planning on using it as a portrait lens, what's the point of shooting at 1.4 when peoples noses are going to be out of focus from their eyes?

Additionally, the 1.8D lens also holds it's price really well on ebay because everyone is after a cheap, high quality, low-light lens. One I was watching the other day ended up going for £75 inc. postage. The lens brand new is about £80.
