I'm looking for a good lens that will cover the 18 to 70ish range that is ideal for lower light conditions and action shots. The lens should be compatible with the D40. It does not have to be Nikkor, off brand is ok.

The only large aperture zoom in this range is from Sigma the AF 18-50mm 2.8 EX DC Asp IF. It has no image stab and costs around 370EUR.
The Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm 3.5-4.5G IF-ED is around 280-300EUR but also has no image stab. See Gordon's verdict here: http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Nikko ... age6.shtml
If you want image stab then there is the Sigma AF 18-200mm 3.5-6.3 DC OS for around 500EUR and the Nikkor AF-S VR DX 18-200mm 3.5-5.6G IF-ED at 650EUR. The Nikkor having the better I.Q. than the Sigma.

Disclaimer: I'm unfortunately not sure whether the SIGMA AF lenses without HSM will autofocus on the D40! Can someone clear this up, please!?!?

Sorry! Just read that the Sigma AF 18-50mm 2.8 EX DC Asp IF does not have an internal AF motor, so does not auto-focus on the D40(x)!!!
So Forget about that lens...

Actually, the lowest price I can see for the Nikkor AF-S DX VR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED is 808 EUR. Where did you see 650 EUR?

Sigma's own list of lenses that will autofocus on the D40(x) is here: http://www.sigma-photo.com/news/news.asp?nID=3324

Good in low light conditions AND for actions shots... This means you need a lens with a large max aperture - such lenses are usually lage, heavy and expensive  One such lens that seems to be highly recommended is the 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor ... ~ $1,200.00 and out of stock currently at both Adorama and B&H...

Oh yeah Darrin, I missed the 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX. But at this price just for having F2.8 I'd rather go for the Nikon 50mm/F1.8 prime lens. MUCH cheaper (below 150$/EUR) plus 1.5 stops brighter plus high IQ!
Nice link to Sigma-News, b.t.w.! So they will make the 18-200 OS also a lens for the D40/x in the (near) future.

Luis, look here: http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a172398.html

You could, but the OP has a D40 and the 50mm 1.8 will NOT autofocus on it

Speaking of which, what would be your recommendation for a third party normal prime lens that would autofocus with the D40? I know Nikon has no normal prime AF-S lenses.

There is no 50mm prime that will autofocus on the D40(x).

Sigma's 30mm 1.4 HSM can be considered a normal lens on APS-C sensors and will autofocus on the D40(x)... but it has its share of problems... softer on the edge and with focus problems in some cases (according to some user reports).

We can only hope that Nikon will add some AF-S primes to its catalog soon...
