Welcome to the forum! :)

You may be able to set an off-camera flashgun to fire when prompted by the little Speedlight made for the V2. If the off-camera flashgun is a Nikon Speedlight, it will be "SU-4" mode, when the Speedlight will fire when it detects a flash from another source.

A benefit of using SU-4 mode is that there are some truly excellent out-of-production Speedlights with SU-4 mode that produce excellent results, yet are relatively inexpensive because they do not have modern I-TTL/Creative Lighting System capability. Some examples would be the SB-28 and SB-80 DX, though the latter has become something of a cult item among folks using third-party radio triggers.

This is not an authoritative answer, just an attempt to help you in your search, as see that no other members have replied. My knowledge of Nikon flash is somewhat limited.

If is searchable, Zack Arias posted a article on his Tumblr that explained how he used a Nikon Speedlight with a cheap Kodak point-and-shoot in an episode of DigitalRev TV, that was part of the series on famous photographers with cheap cameras. This episode is probably still viewable at DigitalRev TV, whose site is click-able with the direct link above right.

Another option, for which I have not searched, would be to see if a third party has yet started making an adapter cable. Off-camera flash produces much more-pleasing results than on-camera flash, anyway, in my opinion.

Canon 5Ds R/7D2/7D/5D/40D/1D2N/M3; Nikon F6/D3s/D700/FM3A/1Dx/Coolpix A. Lens selection undergoing changes; some favorites: Zeiss 2/135 APO Sonnar, Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS and 135L, Nikkor 14-24/2.8G and 24-70/2.8G.
