I've just bought it. I'm upset. I expected much more from Nikon. The single advantage of that lens is the resolution. But it's not ectraordinary resolution. It's simply normal, like all other lenses of this type have.
As for distortion, colour aberrations, vignetting these parameters are quite pour.
I've put some test photos below which could give you some information about that lens.
Anyway 600 USD is not fair price for that lens. The price should be less than 300 USD.
Probably it is acceptable to use this lens as the travel one with the simple bodies like 3100 or 3200.

What camera body are you using?

It is only a mid level lens, so maybe you are expecting a little too much?
It is also only recently released, so prices will fall.

I use D7000 body.
Yes of course, this is the start price. Therefore I regret that I didn't bought 16-85 for the same price.
The matter is that the lenses like 18-105, 35/1.8 and 50/1,8D wich have the prices around 100 -200 USD are much better than the 18-140.
That was my big mistake.

Yeah, I had the 16-85 when I had the D7000. I thought they were a really good combo + with the 70-300mm (another good lens for the price) was quite happy.

It is a disappointment that you aren't happy though. I think it was sort of marketed/touted higher than the standard kit-lenses, but obviously not warranted, which is a shame.

Any chance you can return it, or maybe sell it on at a small loss?

Unfortunately no chance to return. As for the sell with the small loss... Hm... After a few days when I bought it one dealer had dropped the price for 100USD. Idiot! So there is not a small loss, but a big one! :-)
But lets be optimist! :-) I'll use it with my D7000. But I feel that it will be a great headache to treat every shot.
I will wait and store the money for 17-55 or something else.
Anyway I will think twice before the next purchase....

Don't worry too much. Every lens has its limitations, and there is sample variation.

Shoot a lot and work out where your lens strengths are, then use them.

Even my 18-55 has some excellent points and at the right aperture it is more than acceptably sharp. Any zoom is a compromise.

Also - a bit of PP can work wonders!

If it makes you feel a ny better, I have bought a 50/1.8 with some resolution problems on the right side. Even my 16-85 has some "no-go" areas (though I'm very happy with it).
