Don't get bogged down in the MP war! 12 MP is more than enough for 95% of peoples needs.
The D7000 is still highly regarded & at the price it is today (almost 50% of it's release price) is a bargain imho.
The best thing you can do is actually hold them in store & see which feels better to handle and see if the menus & features feel intuitive to you.

And consider the resolution potential of your lens.

Even the 16Mp of the D7000 is pretty exacting.

I like my D7000, but I haven't tried any of the 24Mp models, so I couldn't tell you about those.

But the nice thing is, whichever model you buy, you get an excellent camera.

Have a look at the D90 and compare the number of buttons, control wheels and displays available to check and modify settings against the other models. Despite being nearly 4 years old and only having 12MP Nikon place it 3rd in their DX range just below the D7000 and above the D5200.
