atm I use a 300mm F2.8 + 1.7TC on the D7000 for bird/wildlife shots. This gives me equivalent to 500mm, but still tend to need to crop a fair bit, especially for birds.

Would I still need a cropped frame sensor, in a new camera, or would the D800 or even the D600 produce the same quality pics with even more severe cropping?

I guess what i'm asking is, would FX equal or better DX? (for me)

Also, IF, an updated D7000 was released with say 24MP, would the answer be different?

I'd love a longer lens btw, but that's out of the question!

Well seeing as a D5200 has been announced with 24Mp, I'd think there may be a D7100 around the corner.

But then again there's always something around the corner!

Are you asked to be talked out of going Full Frame?!?!?!?

No i'm not talking myself into FF..... or out of DX really, I just wondered about potential pic quality compared on both.
I hate changing lenses while out shooting & keep the 300mm + TC on the D7000 all the time.
(I do have a D700 though, which mainly has the 16-85 attached in my bag too)

It's more a case of a replacement to my D7000 (which I like) Do I get another/D7100? or would FF/D600 be as good or better?

oldCarlos: Currently a 24MP DX sensor has a higher pixel-density than a 36MP FF. So theoretically the D3200/D5200 or rumored D7200 have an advantage regarding reach.
The question is: when do you start to see the lens limiting resolution? In the center of the image circle quality lenses should still perform good enough to gainn from the higher pixel-density. But put a TC on them, I don't know.
My otherwise superb Nikon AF-S 70-200/2.8VRii clearly showed its limits with a 1.7xTC on my 12MP D300.
So it all depends...

A little more specific:
- A D700 has a DX-crop of 5.3MP
- A D600 has a DX-crop of 10.6MP
- A D800 has a DX-crop of 16MP (equivalent to a D7000)
So a 12MP FX-body is not really for those who like to shoot birds, a D600 body is closer, a D800 is equivalent to a D7000 so this is really pretty good already.
But on a given high quality fixed prime and at a given working distance a 24MP DX sensor (equivalent pixel-density of 54 MP FX-sensor) can give you the highest resolution shots.

I did try out my D700, but wasn't too impressed with the results. It looks like i'll stick with DX for birding & wait to see if they bring out a new/updated D7000 in the next couple of months.
