I am wanting a good light walk around zoom. I have narrowed it down to these two lenses. One is new, the other is 2nd hand. They are:
Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8 2nd hand which I can get for around $400. This is a professional fast lens. The narrow range doesn’t worry me that much.
The other is the Nikon 24-85mm VR AF-S NIKKOR G for around $600.
The money difference here doesn’t worry me. What I am not sure about is whether it is worth sacrificing the speed for the practicality of VR. I always worry about camera shake.
Your opinions would be very valuable to me.

Hello Dale, you've certainly seen my review of the Nikon AF-S 24-85/3.5-4.5G VR?! You can also see i tperform against the best 24-70/2.8 lenses in my 24-70/85-Shootout.
I don't know about the quality of the 35-70/2.8 but I'm also someone who'd rather have image stabilization in my lenses than not.

Thanks Thomas - appreciate your words. The 24-85 kit lens appears to be very good value
