Welcome to the forum! :)

Yes. The 50mm 1.8G AF-S lens has a built-in focusing motor. The 50mm AF 1.8D does not have its own motor, and will not auto-focus on your camera.

Hello janet pac, and welcome to the friendly Camera Labs forum!

As to your Q: RexGig is right!
If there is an "AF-S" designation in a Nikon Nikkor lens it is going to AF on all Nikon F-mount bodies like the D3x00 and D5x00.

it gives D3100 and D5100 (and older similar DSLRs) users autofocus on a short telephoto (for DX) prime lens that is modest in price. The 50mm f/1.8D is a fine lens, but it won't focus on the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000, and D5100, so it really needed an update.
