The 16-85mm has the benefit of covering the wide-angle on a DX-body like the D5x00 much better than the 24-85. If you go for the 24-85 (and sell your kit 18-55) there is a good chance that you want to cover the gap with a wide-angle zoom like the 12-24mm or 10-24mm for architecture or landscape shots.
My advice: If you're probably staying with a DX-format body for the foreseeable future there are better option for you than the 24-85.
