I am looking to make my first DLSR purchase. I was all set to buy a Nikon 5100. However a friend who has upgraded to a 7100 is looking to sell his Nikon d40x. How much should I expect to pay? Trawling back through old reviews and this forum it seems the d40x is a good performer and in its day was seen as ground breaking. It we'd suit me right now to start my DLSR voyage at as low an entry price as possible however is this just false economy and I should get the 5100 and be uptodate. Any advice would be great.

Welcome to the forum Peter, not to sure about the price of a used D40x because when new all prices here are inflated. I still have my D40X and found that it gave me all I wanted as a newbie. There's many good comments on the forum about the D40x and for me it's a good camera.

It's always good to concentrate on lenses and not overvalue bodies. But the question is: how long will a D40x body bear with you. The D40x was certainly a competent little camera at its time but I really would suggest to go with the D5100. It has the same excellent sensor as the D7000 and that is what can last you for a very long time.
