I am looking at buying Polarizers to work with lenses having 58, 67, 72 & 77mm threads. I plan on getting at least a 77mm Polarizer, maybe one more. How many more Polarizers are recommended vs. step up rings to accommodate these sizes?

Ex:
77mm Polarizer
58-77 step up
67-77 step up
72-77 step up

Also, when does it make more sense to use a step down vs a step up ring (if you haven't purchased any yet)? Ex: If you have a 62mm & 77mm Polarizer, for a 67mm thread lens, is it better to go down to 62 or up to 77?

Id get a 77mm circ-pol and then step up rings from xxmm to 77mm for all your lenses.

Is there even such thing as a step down ring? Surely it just adds severe vignetting? Wouldnt advise it

Step up AND step down rings are advertised.

Buy 1 filter (77mm in your case) then seperate step down rings ffrom 77mm to whatever you need. (or a combination together, to reach the size you need.
DON'T OVERTIGHTEN ANY OF THEM!

I have an Nikkor 18-200mm VR and a 70-200 f2.8 VR II. I just made a photo trip to Yellowstone NP. I shot everything with the Circ-Polarizer in place.

Too make a short story shorter. The Circ-Polarizer is the current Nikon. It is visible in the four corners of the frame at 18mm.
