have a Nikon D5000 with a 70-300mm vr lens. I am looking at adding the Nikkor 300mm f4d-ed with a teleconvertor Tc14E11. Has anyone got any experience with these two lenses, and what would i get over my existing 70-300mm lens. Or is there any other tele lens that would be suitable for mainly birds in flight and also static.

The 300mm f4 is a lot sharper then the 70-300mm at 300mm. You can shoot the 300 f4 wide open with amazing results. In addition the 300mm has a reproduction ratio of 1:4 which would allow you to get rather good close up shoots of flowers and larger insects.

The main benefits of the 70-300mm is the size, weight and VR. The 300mm f4 lacks VR but for birds in flight it doesn't matter. However the biggest difference would be the weight, the 300mm is a monster to the 70-300mm.

On a side note have you considered the Sigma 100-300mm f4? Its my primary telephoto lens and I think it preforms very comparable to the Nikon 300mm f4, maybe a hair less sharp.
