Got this great camera (D90) as a gift and am definitely a novice with DSLR's. Was always a point and shoot gal with the desire to explore photography at a more sophisticated level. Any recommendations on books/guides to help me learn this camera?

The manual that came with it? ;)
that, and perhaps Gordon's tutorials (they focus more on practice, not theory)

Looking for something that goes above and beyond the manual. Like a book/guide that replaces a class, e.g. gives assignments and guides you through the discovery of the camera. Does this exist? Thanks.

Check out the tutorials section in the menu bar at the top of the page!

And don't let anyone make you think you have to shoot in Manual or anything 'clever' just because you've got a DSLR. The D90 works great in Auto modes, and to be honest, I shoot mostly in program (P), which is fully automatic.

Have you had a look for online resources. Looking for "Nikon tutorial" in a search engine gave things like...

http://www.nikondigitutor.com/eng/d90/index.shtml
http://www.tutorialstore.co.uk/acatalog ... orial.html

and Scott Kelby's videos
http://kelbytv.com/dtowntv/

There are also quite a few podcasts you can look at if you have iTunes installed on your computer e.g. Woven Shadows, Photography 101, F-Stop Beyond
