Hi folks,

Very sad news today from Japan regarding the earthquake and consequent tsunami. The ultimate tragedy is, of course, the loss of life and serious injuries that have no doubt occurred but I've added this post to the Nikon section as the Mainichi Daily News reports that a 10-meter tsunami was observed at Sendai port in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Nikon have a facility at Sendai (source) but I'm unaware of whether it was directly affected. Hopefully not but this article from the Aviation Herald shows how the airport, by the coast, was affected. Best wishes to everyone in the region and, purely in the context of this forum section, the Nikon employees in Sendai.

Bob.

I'd echo Bob in hoping all are safe in Japan right now.

I have some friends further south round Tokyo area, where the shock was still strong. Doesn't sound like anything major there, but trains are stopped for the day and they are 10's of km away from home. One reported looking for a taxi for 3 hours without luck so far. The other has a very long walk ahead.

Indeed, prayers sent for all Japanese people in the affected areas, but the Nikon facility in Sendai makes the disaster more personal, as those whose hands have made some Nikon products are now in adverse conditions.

All our thoughts are with them. It's awful to think it was 8000 times more powerful than the one which hit Christchurch.

Update news from Nikon Corp.

Quote:
We are suspending operations there and continuing to evaluate further details of the damage. We are unable to announce how soon the operation will resume due to the regional interruption of life-lines although endeavor for restoration are under the way by some of our maintenance personnel.

Apparently this seems to be a Very long wait to resume its regular operation. :(
