Well, I've pre-ordered the D7000 with kit lens (through the Camera Labs link of course!). Very excited. Spent much time considering which lens to go with; after reading a few of Gordon's reviews that included the 18-105 and 16-85, I ultimately decided that the best idea was to get the kit lens and save the $300+ extra that the 16-85 would cost, and put that toward buying a second lens in the future.

Thanks to all of you who made helpful suggestions, and to Gordon for his reviews (and to a local place that let me try out a D90 for a few minutes).

I don't think Gordon has reviewed the 18-105 lens? Unless I am blind! ha ha

No he hasn't, but if you read the reviews of the 16-85 and the 18-200 he includes some test results from the 18-105 for the sake of comparison, and talks about it again in the "verdict" portion of both reviews. So although he hasn't written a review specifically for the 18-105, I still felt that I got enough information from the other reviews to conclude that the 18-105 is really a decent walk-around lens, and that I will probably be happy with it.

I want this very badly...I feel like I've pushed my d40 to the point where I can't do too much with is anymore...and the ISO performance looks amazing...seriously the iso 6400 on the d7000 looks better then the iso 1600 on my d40.

So, in the States, Best Buy still lists Oct 17-22 as your expected arrival date if you preorder the D7000. Amazon, on the other hand, for the kit says "This item will be released on November 15, 2010." It doesn't give any date for "body only". So... I hope Best Buy is right. My pre-order though is with Amazon.

Alas. Followed up by checking my email and found one from Amazon saying "we now have an estimated ship date... Nov 18 - Nov 22". A Google search yielded this statement from "newsodrome.com", whoever they are:

"Amazon US probably sold out their first Nikon D7000 shipment in pre-orders. Currently, Amazon US lists November 15th as the release date for the Nikon D7000 kit. The rumor is that all major chains in the US got their initial D7000 shipment and could start filling pre-orders as early as October 15th."

Well, maybe our local camera store will get some sooner... I was really hoping to be out shooting before the temps dip below freezing... was even hoping to catch a few leaves left on the trees. Oh well. Patience is a virtue ...or something. :-)

I wouldnt really follow estimated release dates at this moment in time, because this camera was expected to be selling like hot cakes. If you pre-ordered first week possible, I would expect you to be a lucky owner in one of the first shipments. There is also a difference in Body-only and Kits release dates, always has been as far as I know with these bodies (except for the entry levels D3000 and such)

From Nikon Rumours

"Several readers were able to buy the D7000 from Best Buy today. Many stores will get in trouble for not keeping their sells embargo (October 17th). I could not even see the camera in my local Best Buy and they had several in stock. I even talked to the manager and they told me to come back on Sunday.

Here are several unboxing pictures for those who did not get one today (thanks Larry N. and many others who sent in pictures):"

From Nikon Rumours:

"Taken at an unknown Best Buy store:"

"Again, don’t assume that you can walk into a Best Buy store today and buy one. They will be released for sale around October 17th or 18th, which are probably the embargo dates for all retailers. Some Best Buy stores may not have any, others may have only only 1-2 pieces."
