So I talked to my mom and I think I can buy my camera online so I am looking at...

Nikon D80 body - $853.69
MB-D80 - $127.67
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 - $104.50
S&H - $15.00
____________________________

$1,100.86 Total!

Do you think I can last with a 50mm alone for a couple weeks till I get like a 18-55 so I can have some wide angle coverage? This is looking like a really sweet deal but I am gonna search some more and see if I can't get a 18-70mm instead of the 50mm for about $1200, then get a 50mm. This will last me an extremely long time so I won't be tempted to upgrade. What do you think?

I think you might get away with it, gives you time to get the feel of the camera and get familiar with it to make sure you know it inside out and get used to the position of the controls compared to the D40.

If you are selling your camera to your friend still, ask if you could perhaps lone the lens from here now and then until you get your new one - it is a bit cheeky but a photographers gotta do what a photographers gotta do 8)

I know, and I really will never use above 70mm. I am kinda an all still life portrait guy. I mean that is an awesome deal and I can get a 18-55mm in like 2 weeks after I get all this since I can get one for like $80.

This is probably the best deal I can find since all the D80's with 18-70mm are re-furb. I could possibly order it this weekend?

It is all re-furbed by Nikon. What are the down sides of buying a re-furb kit, other than the sensor having some mileage?

I could get a Nikon D80 and 18-70mm re-furbed by Nikon for about $1000 even, then get a MB-D80 for about $130 and have my SB-600. That is an awesome set-up and I would definetely go for it depending on what the down sides of getting a re-furb are.

------------------
Actually I could get the D80 and 18-70mm(re-furb) and a new MB-D80 off amazon.com for about $1100 even.

So how would I know what's new or not? lol Are some of the stores lying about that? Right now I could get a new D80 with 18-135mm for 1,059.99 after instant rebate. *bangs head* Why can't these things be cheaper.

Seeing as youve set your mind on what photography you want to do., also wat lense/lenses you want.

I think the 18-55/*70 would do you fine for now!. I've heared darn good things about the 50mm, but you may miss the range from 18+.. Hmm.

Well a deal should pop up sometime!

Best of Luck

Jay

What about the lenses you already have for the D40? Why do you need to make do with only the 50mm prime?

I am selling my D40 + lenses for the cash. I will only be stuck with a 50mm for like a week or a week and half till I get a 18-55/70mm. So I think if my mom gives me the okay then I am gonna go for the D80/MB-D80/50mm.

-------------------
Right now I have 3 options...

Nikon D80
MB-D80
50mm f/1.8
____________
$1100

Nikon D80 refurb by Nikon
Nikkor 18-70mm refurb by Nikon
MB-D80
______________________________
$1100

Nikon D80
18-55mm
MB-D80
____________
$1100

If I go with the last one, I could get a 50mm f/1.8 about a week or two after I get that.

I'd go with the third option Nathan.

Why?: You will be wanting to use your camera 24/7 when you get it and may want to be experimenting more using the 18-55mm range.

As you say you can purchase the 50mm f1.8, a week or 2 later., Just gives you more scope to have fun with the range of the third choice :P

I was leaning towards that choice to, and it seems the best choice. I will find out today or tommorow when I can get it.

I don't think you'll have problems with a used sensor, provided it's clean (no dust).

On the other hand, it seems the shutter has a lifespan of a certain number of releases.

Could anyone please confirm the expected lifespan of a D80 shutter?

Are you saying you're selling an 18-55mm to your mate only to buy another one in a couple of weeks? Surely that's madness?

Zorro :?

Might not be that mad if his mate doesn't want a D40 without a kit lens, mate. :P

Kind of, I am selling my D40 w/18-55mm and 55-200mm VR for $850 then with the like $300 I already have I am gonna get a D80 w/18-55mm and a MB-D80. Then a few weeks after that I am gonna get a 50mm f/1.8.
--------------
I could save even more money by getting the Opteka BP-D80 with 2 batteries instead of the MB-D80.
