Hi folks,

Christian Buil has done some preliminary tests of the long exposure noise filtering capabilities of the D3 and D300. His tests were done in an astrophotography context but the results may be of wider interest if you plan long low-light exposures.

The feature is written in both French and English (allternative paragraphs) and can be read here.

Bob.

Ah, that may be the reason that I never got any got night-sky shots with stars, even under the beautiful sky of New Zealand

Found this piece at ByThom: "most current Nikons apply a median filter to data coming off the sensor with long exposures (the D3 and D300 are exceptions). This makes these cameras less useful for some types of work, such as astronomical photography"

Hi Thomas,

Have you been away? Welcome back if you have. 8) Thanks for the link: it looks like I was very lucky to go with Canon when I made my first foray into the DSLR world last year. Phew!

Bob.

Update: I have just discovered that all is not lost - see my post here for a way around this problem.
