I've just noticed that, on my D40 coupled to a VR 18-200, and while moving the zoom from 18 to 200 mm and back, I can actually feel a gust of air going in and out of the camera body, through the viewfinder. I have to do this indoors and have my eye close to the viewfinder.

Wow...

I wonder if better weather sealed Nikon cameras also do this. The air has to go in and out somewhere.

Haha I can notice it on my viewfinder as well. I have to move the lens in quicker than normal though to tell.

Uh
Wouldn't this means that the sensor would somehow be affected ? Getting a dose of puff air everytime you zoom in and out ?
Or is this the 'cleaning in progress'

To my mind this "feature" is the single biggest downside to zooms on dSLR bodies.

Also, if you think about it, the higher the build quality of the zoom (and hence the cost), the more pronounced the effect will be.

I always thought that the rear element on all but the older lenses were sealed?
