i just orderd the D40+KIT and the 18-200mm. but i still dont understand if the 18-200mm covers close ranges well enough for me to drop the 18-55 kit.

i watched the reviews but he seems to kinda be half pleased with its close range abillity.

need some advice here..

I say drop the kit lens and with the money you save maybe pickup a 50mm or an SB-400.

Hello manxral, and welcome to the Camera Labs forum!
If you buy the VR 18-200mm you can normally forget about the 18-55mm kit-lens.
But yes, Gordon reported some variability in how close you can focus with the 18-200 or more specifically how much the max magnification of this lens is. I can say from my measurements it's around 1:4. The kit lens in Gordon's test got better than 1:2. So in very close-up situations the kit-lens is better than the 18-200mm.
