Less than 12 hours to go...

Bjørn Rørslett (of Natur Fotograf fame) is already in Tokyo and confirmed on another forum that the Nikon press conference will take place between 1 pm and 4 pm JST. For the US East Coast it all begins at midnight

Bob - as demonstrated on dpreview, the headlines are created based on the URL... someone managed to announce a Canon 5D there :D

So far the rumors point to a new action pro camera, a D200 upgrade, a bunch of fast telephoto primes and a set of Coolpixes nobody talks about 8)

People are still trying to figure out what is the big surprise Thom Hogan was talking about... among the candidates (all rumors) - very good high ISO (6400+), live view that uses a P&S-like contrast detection focus system when the mirror is up, full color capture (see the recently "discovered" Nikon patent) and so on. But all these have been discussed to death so nobody will be surprised anymore if some turn out to be true :D

Darrin

P.S. The other forum is going crazy!! 8)
P.P.S. 9 and 1/2 hours to go :o

Whoops - thanks for pointing this out. I've removed the content in my post. I hope the web master is as embarrassed as I am.

Bob.

Don't worry Bob - things are happening so fast it's hard to see what's true and what's fake in real time....

It seems that a few places have a hint of what is coming on their stock lists,

4th item down in the left hand column

cool stuff man, the D3xs. If that is however their new camera, then I will be getting a D200 if they don't discontinue it.

Only interesting innovation for me would be, if Nikon announces a FF-body.
There are so many FF-capable Nikon- plus third-party-lenses out there (like the unbelievably ultra-wide FF-Sigma 12-24mm), that it would be a pity for Nikon to throw away that (possible) jump in IQ with a FF-body...

Dang!!!!
I was away from my computer for a couple of hours and missed the Popular Science leak

So far nobody posted a screen capture, but some managed to recover the beginning of the post.... a D3 with 36x23.9 (full frame) sensor, 12 mp, 9 fps, and a D300 with DX sensor, 12 mp and 8 fps...

The D3 seems to have better features than the 1D Mark 3 and at a similar price to it (based on Andrew's find). The D300 seems to go up to ISO 3200.

12MP-FF sensor? That doesn't sound to good against the 21MP Canon FF-sensor...
But at least it could be less noise + better contrast :?

Thomas - from what I understand, the pro body to be announced tomorrow will compete against the Canon 1D (the sports camera) and not the 1Ds. The current rumors indicate that Nikon's high resolution pro body will be announced next year...

Most likely - I don't see them using a 12 mp FF sensor in their sports body and a smaller sensor with around 20 mp in their higher resolution body...

6 hours to go....

So what is the word on the D200 if the D300 goes into operation? I planned on buy a D200 body pretty soon but if the D300 comes out will the D200 be discontinued...meaning I have to sav emy pennies for even longer to get a D300. If so I might just getr a D80 w/MB-D80 and Sigma 10-20mm for almost the same price.
