Just got this combo after reading review and some of this forums experiences.

Noticing a real problem of a lens shadow at the bottom of the image + darkness in the top and bottom R corners when at 18mm and using flash (no lens hood). The corners are still dark if no flash is used. Obviously there is no lens shadow.

Is this to be expected?

This is called vignetting. It can be a problem when shooting at 18mm with the aperture wide open. Try stopping the aperture down a couple of stops, it should get better.
