I've seen that clip around elsewhere, but is was lacking in detail as to what the long term damage was. For example, would resetting the camera or the "sensor clean" trick help restore the function? Or was that part of the sensor fried for good?

The "sensor clean" trick on Canon is used to clear hot pixels that might show up in normal shooting (not long exposure). Apparently when you go into sensor clean mode, the camera cuts all charge to the sensor and that effectively resets it. I have successfully used this on the 50D a couple times but fortunately the transient hot pixels are rare appearing.

That's really weird because:

The laser used is actively pointed at the crowd, meaning it HAS to be class 2 or 3, with a maximum power of ~5 mW/beam. I would not think that intensity would damage the camera, as I can imagine daylight is much more powerful at times.

However, the light appears to be white/purple is, which has a shorter wavelength and is more intense.

Still, I'm not pointing my 20mW green into my sensor. Thanks for sharing.
