can I use the old canon 540 ez flash on my 50d or could that hurt the camera?

It won't hurt the camera. I think there are some issues using the EZ models on a crop sensor body (Someone else will probably add to this thread with the details), but the flash should not damage the body.

Trigger voltages are quite high on older flashes and CAN potentially damage your camera. I think canon's limit is 30 volts.

There's a database for compatibility online somewhere, I'd suggest googling something like "flash trigger voltages".

ok I sent my question to canon tech support and they said that it would be fine,

so now my question is can I use cactus v2s or v4 with both the 580ex2 and the 540ez flash
