I've just heard that on the 12th of Jan, most if not all retailers selling Nikon goods will be increasing their prices by up to 20%!!!

Grays of Westminster too. If you can buy whatever you were thinking of buying before then DO SO. This price increase will mean a 24-70 AF-S will go up from the current 1000 pounds to 1200. I've planned a trip to the UK for the 19th, and it looks like I'll be missing out on this 200 pounds. It's still cheaper than here in Greece, but just wanted to let you all know.

Elsewhere I've heard a rumour that Sony will also be putting up prices shortly. Not unexpected given the massive shift in exchange rates.

Anyway, for those outside the UK, at least with the weak pound you can possibly get more of them than you could otherwise so it might take the edge off a bit...

Great, i can barely afford gear as it is . If this goes ahead it will be like nikon shooting them selves in the foot, in the current economical climate this will slow sales even more

Two words: credit crunch.

Basically the UK economy totally stinks at the moment only slightly less so than Zimbabwe and Iceland. Look at the big two exchange rates. The USD rate was around $2 before the crunch, now it is about $1.45. For items at a fixed USD cost, that's effectively an increase of 38%. Similarly it was around the 200JPY mark just before crunch, now it's ~135. That's an implied 50% increase. Of course it's not as simple as that as other fluctuations might work in out favour, but the trend has to be in an upward direction in the short term. Great if you're a UK based exporter, sucks to be importing anything.

Look at your camera kit. Chances are it's not made in the UK so the massive exchange rate swings will have a significant impact. This wont be limited to Nikon and will affect everyone.

The main exception to this is if a manufacturer has excess inventories, where shifting it at a low cost may still work out better overall than warehouses sat full of stuff that isn't selling. But DSLR kit isn't exactly "pile it high, sell it low" so unlikely to apply.

I personally think that the retailers/manufacturers should try and stabilise the pricing of goods instead of fluctuating pricing. My general gist was that the price increase would only slow down sales in an already snail pace market, it would be best to get sales going again and boost the economy as a whole.

The price is stabilised to some extent, as the increases are only working through now. Things don't get made overnight, and materials and services are likely negotiated over moderate periods thus providing some smoothing to shorter term fluctuations. But manufacturers are not going to sell at a loss unless they have a very good reason or no other choice, and I don't think we're in that position.

I've still got the Nikon 14-24mm Ultra wide lens on backorder at the cheaper (£972) price, but it's yet to come into stock. I've been waiting ages for this lens but I'm loathed to cancel the order as the prices are nearly £150 more expensive elsewhere.
