I'm happy that you find good advice at Camera Labs.
I have used the Sigma 10-20mm many times but sold it as I will switch to FX in the future and have the Nikon 14-24/2.8 for that.
The problem when your budget does not allow the new Nikon 10-24mm is the unreliable quality control (QC) of 3rd party manufacturers like Sigma, Tokina or Tamron. I had bad examples from all three of them and sent them back. Fortunately my second sample of Sigma 10-20mm was good. So be prepared to immediately test your new lens and buy at a shop that does not have a prohibitive restocking fee.
Having made these experiences I'd still recommend the Sigma 10-20mm.
