I am heading to a large car show this weekend. I will be so hurt to snap 8gb worth of pics only to have a handful turn out. I will be shooting with my newly acquired Canon XSi / kit lens 17-55mm (looks like the hood I ordered may not make it in time). I also have the 50mm f/1.8, but it will serve no purpose with the amount of people attending / distance needed to get a complete car in perspective.

I am hoping for a nice sunny day even though the forecast shows a rainy/cloudy weekend. If you want to offer tips with cloudy weather as well, I'll take the advice

You might want to bring a circular polarizer filter to reduce some light reflections. IMO shooting a car show on a sunny day shouldn't be that hard. Just as you said, the crowd won't give you any chance to use the prime, so be sure to bring the 17-55.

Did you get some good pics or tips about camera settings that you could pass along?

as far as taking pictures of cars...i'd suggest going full manual. it's not going anywhere...

also, if possible try to take pictures of the car with the hood down. that way you can preserve the body lines...

unless of course you WANT the engine in the shot.

As a dslr noob - can you explain to me what you meant by saying the 50mm f/1.8 lens would be useless for that situation?

If by a car 'show' you mean a race meeting type of thing, I think you meant because you'd need to zoom closer into the track/action - obviously not possible with this lens!

If however, you meant a 'show' as in all cars nicely parked and polished up for everyone to mull around and admire, then I'm confused

I have been around Classic cars for many years as an enthusiast but not taking pictures. I attended an event a couple of weeks ago, high bright sun - yes this is difficullt - this time to specifically take pics-

My advise, take a bucket full get back and review, and then take the pictures again - this is how I have developed / improved my car pictures.
