So is that a mode that has to come on your camera? Or a lens to use?
I've seen some pretty good panoramic pictures and I think I'd enjoy taking some myself.

Unless you have a seriously wide angle lens, then the most common way is to stitch together many photos. Take a sequence of photos with a reasonable amount of overlap, ideally using exactly the same settings. Then feed it into something like Photoshop Elements which has a tool to put them together.
